John Leroy Gydesen

John Leroy Gydesen of Reed City passed away Sunday, March 26, 2017 at his residence.  He was 83.

He was born April 27, 1933 in Watervliet to Morris and Bernice (Morrison) Gydesen.  He was raised in Luther and was a 1952 graduate of Luther High School.  John joined the United States Army after graduation and completed his basic training at Fort Benning, GA.  He became a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division and later joined the 101st Airborne Division as a jumpmaster.  Due to a parachute jump related injury, he transferred to the 321st Artillery Unit attached to the 82nd Airborne and completed two combat tours in Viet Nam where he was awarded the Combat Medical Badge and a Bronze Star.  He returned to Fort Bragg, NC and served in the 108th MP Company and retired in 1976 after over 25 years of honorable service to his country.  He was employed with the Reliable trucking company along with his son Paul for several years and after travelling the country he relocated permanently to the Reed City area in the mid 1980’s.  He was a lifetime member of the Reed City VFW 2964.  The family would like to extend a special thanks to his daughter Maryjane and Dan for the care and love they showed John in his last months.

He is survived by his children: Greg (Dawn), Johnny, Maryjane (Dan), Paul (Sandy), and Jackie (Willie); 12 grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren; and his sister Sylvia.  He was preceded in death by his parents Morris and Bernice Gydesen and daughter-in-law Donna; siblings: Bill, Calvin, Buck, Norman, and Mary; and his special nephew Cpl. Gregory A. Gydesen who followed his example of service in the military.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 P.M. Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the Pruitt-Livingston Funeral Home in Reed City with Mr. Lance Cornelius officiating.  Visitation with the family will be from 10:00 A.M. until the time of services.  Burial and military honors will take place at the Dover Township Cemetery in Bristol at 3:00 P.M.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Reed City VFW 2964.
